mvyradio @ Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest 2008

Barbara's Journal

Sunday, July 13th, 10:30 PM

Donna Summer is on stage and the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest is coming to a close.  What a ride, as Nick said tonight.  A big ride for all of us from www.mvyradio.com, a big ride for all of the artists who played, and an incredible creative work of art for all of the organizers, vendors, and volunteers who have made LeBreton Flats Park their home for the last ten days.  We are so impressed with this festival and how it flowed from one day to the next, one act to the next.

Thank you to Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest Executive/Artistic Director Mark Monahan for extending a warm and go get 'em invitation to us. Thank you to Nathalie Laperriere, Sarah PC, Scott, AJ, Rob, Mike and everyone at Ottawa Bluesfest for their support and guidance.  Thanks to Paul Dubas from Cisco, without whom many of the shows would not have been streamed.  Thanks to Steve, Scott, John, Kristen and everyone from Liverpool Court Studios; thanks to our video crew from Liverpool -- Carly, Scott, Jeff, Keith, Alex and all the other video techs.  Thanks to all of the sound engineers from Wall Sound -- Matt, Pete, Jerod, Kelly, Frank and Ken; thanks to all of the stage managers -- Mark, Bill, Wiggy,Micheline, Dalelle and Claude. Thank you to all the folks at The War Museum -- JP, Robin and Gilles. Thanks to Pete from The Ottawa Citizen for his beautiful pictures. Thank you to all at mvyradio.com -- Joe Gallagher, Gary Guthrie, Nick Cortese, PJ Finn, Todd Carley, Laurel Redington, Lindsay Reid, Marianna Cibulasova, Jacqueline Noel  and all our staff.  Thank you to our mvyradio On The Road sponsor Scion.

What a collaborative operation!  We are so happy to have been a part of this festival --THANK YOU to all involved!!!!!

Sunday, July 13th 7PM

The day completely turned around -- it was rainy when Gary and I went to get some coffee this morning but now it's sunny and mostly clear.  You couldn't ask for better weather!  We only had short periods of cloudy weather and hardly any rain throughout the whole ten day festival.

Martha Wainwright played just now with her mom Kate McGarrigle.  They were so sweet together, very funny and loose.  They drove up from Montreal this morning after rehearsing for "a half an hour".  I interviewed Martha earlier -- she was very engaging and we talked about her musical family and her new album "I Know You're Married But I Have Feelings, Too."  A very funny title, a real attention grabber.  It's a line in her song "Bleeding All Over You" and when you hear it in context it has a totally different effect.

Joe's off to record Canned Heat;  Nick will check out Robert Randolph, one of his faves, and record Don McLean.  Donna Summer is the final night headliner and we heard that she had 4 tractor-trailers load in -- man, what's inside those trucks?

Sunday, July 13th 2PM

The Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest is winding down but we have a full set of recordings to do today, with a live stream of Martha Wainwright's set on The Roots Stage.  Tune into the stream here www.mvyradio.com at around 5:30.  I'm going to interview the Montreal native later this afternoon along with The Sauce Boss and Debbie Davies.  We'll catch and capture both of their sets from The River Stage today.

Saturday, July 12th 7PM

We've been cooking today with interviews.  We spent time with our friend Sarah Borges and then streamed her show.  Ed Williams was a delight both on stage and off.  Carly shot the interview and Lil' Ed was animated and looking fine in his Fez (made by his wife) and his fancy, colorful vest from New Orleans.  He talked about his uncle J.B. Hutto and how much he learned from him about playing music and living a good life.  "He taught me to be happy, 'cause if you're happy all the time you don't have time to be sad."

There's an incredible line-up tonight!  The Holmes Brothers, Anders Osborne, J.J. Grey and Mofro, Joan Armatrading, and Tom Wilson.  Yikes!

Saturday, July 12th 1PM

I'm feeling better today; yesterday I was hit with a sore throat that pulled me down a bit.  But it's all over now, or mostly.  I was able to get some sleep and I'm ready for another full day.  This has been a real stamina test for all of us; we're into the final stretch so I think we're going to make it home.  I'm working on setting up interviews with Ed Williams of Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, Sarah BorgesSauce Boss, and Tom Wilson.

Shelby Lynne with BD

It's been a whirlwind of video interviews, this afternoon -- first, a very engaging Mark Monahan, the director of the Ottawa Bluesfest. As you'll see in the video when it's posted below, all of the musical energy we're capturing this week started with one man's passion some 15 years ago and has now grown into one of the five largest music festivals in North America. It's a great story and I think you'll enjoy watching it. After that, it was off to the Bank of America stage for a quick chat with Sean from Great Big Sea and, then, we climbed aboard Shelby Lynne 's tour bus to get some insights into her new Dusty Springfield homage, "Just a Little Lovin'". I renewed my interest in Dusty when we were in Memphis a few years ago and heard the back story of "Dusty in Memphis", but hearing Shelby talk about how she went about recapturing the spirit through things like doing the recording in analog, gives me even further insight. Then, seeing Shelby live on the Blacksheep stage, tonight, made the circle complete. There's something so fearless and freeing in her stage presence.

Friday, July 11th, 3:54 PM

It's been a perfectly beautiful day, so far. One of those crisp air, blue sky kind of days. Nick, Gary, and I just got here and things are ramping up fast for tonight's performances. Tour buses are pulling in, sound checks going on, lots of artist crews saying hi to old friends. I can tell this is going to be a great evening.

Thursday, July 10th 9:30 PM

Chris Robinson
of The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes streaming live on mvyradio.com from a stage that is just a couple hundred yards away...just checking the sound and it's clear and rockin'!  Joe's in the sound truck running the stream for the second time tonight.   I'm going to switch over to the other stream -- Dave Maxwell's set in The Barney Danson Theater.  Sounds great, too!  David has just asked The Texas Horns to sit in.  I'm going to take a trip outta the trailer and take a look and a listen to The Crowes.

Thursday, July 10th 3:30 PM

It seems kind of crazy to be sitting in a trailer listening to

Melissa Ferrick's Cool Shoes

Rolling into the festival grounds, up the metal stairs to the trailer door, computer out of the bag, placed on the table and switched on. I have a little time to spend with you...  Today is probably the best day we have seen weather-wise.  It's sunny and cooler, and the air is really clear.  Joe is over at The Bank Of America Stage making sure that all is set for the streaming tonight.  Even though we have already done some recording and streaming from there, you can never be sure that things will work in the way they need to.  Joe always gets on site early and gets to the stages way before showtime to be able to deal with any eventuality.

We're sharing our trailer with the crew from Liverpool Court Studios.  It gets pretty packed in here, but we all manage to get our work done and stay sane.  We have four computers on this table; on one side is Gary, rendering audio from the shows and on the other is Nick, doing the same thing, plus putting together features for the "air". And then there's Joe, with his laptop that ends up on top of the printer sometimes, organizing our days, printing schedules, putting out fires here and back home.

Barbara's Favorite Cafe

Thursday, July 10th 10 AM

My first cup from The Second Cup on Elgin is tasting mighty good right now as I answer emails and set up interviews for us to do later on.  We'll spend time with Melissa Ferrick and Eli Paperboy Reed today, and we'll take a stroll around the site with Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest graphic design coordinator Francis Diago.  There's a lot happening here in addition to the music on the stages.  There are -- the merchandise and food tents, and the artisan village where vendors from all over come to sell their goods.  We'll be streaming four shows tonight!  I think this is a record for one night.  Melissa Ferrick, David Maxwell, Eli Paperboy Reed and The Black Crowes. WOW!

Kathleen Edwards

Wednesday, July 9th 9:45 PM

Walter Trout just played on The River Stage and he was joined for a couple of songs by Jason Ricci. Joe was at the board and he was so excited about the combination of the two, he wrote me from his Treo. When I talked with Walter after his set, it was clear that he was thrilled about the show and said that some nights are magical and this was one of them. He has a new album called "The Outsider" and some of his good friends helped him out on it. John Porter produced and John Mayall and Coco Montoya contributed.

I was talking with Marie, Walter's wife and manager backstage and her six year old son came running over and said "Mommy, mommy!  Bernard Alison is on stage!" This kid has spent some time on the road!

I'm off to see Calexico, Grupo Fantasma, and Brian Wilson...one at a time!

Wednesday, July 9th 5PM

We've had our production meeting and we're ready to go out to the stages to do our thing.  Joe and I are going to head over to The Black Sheep Stage and see if we can record Jim Bryson.  He's doing his own set and and will play with Kathleen Edwards, too.  You'll know if he lets us plug in if you find the audio here.  Off we go....

Wednesday, July 9th 11 AM

Most of us start working at the hotel in the morning catching up on all things Ottawa and other business.  The first thing that I do is head on out to The Second Cup for a super duper, super strong large latte.  The walk from the hotel to Elgin is a great way to ease into the day.  I've been doing The Lunch Hour from Ottawa this week and I'm getting set for that.  Some Jason Collett, David Maxwell and JT for lunch!

Bettye LaVette and Barbara

Tuesday, July 8th 7PM

We're way in now -- we asked each other what day it was this afternoon, and said "Good Morning!" instead of "Good Afternoon!" as we walked into the trailer. I knew it would be like this when we started; a combination of daze and ease after so many days of non-stop work. Very satisfying results for all this effort!

We are carrying two streaming events today, guitarist Pierre Bensusan and blues guy Jason Ricci. We were just in Jason's trailer and got a dose of his sarcasm and a few bars of harmonica, played on a 100 year old harmonica. Less that twenty four hours ago, we were in the same dressing room with Bettye Lavette, getting pulled in to her wonderful world. She welcomed us with open arms and thanked US for coming to talk with her. Nick, Carly, Keith (from Liverpool Court Studio) and I were most grateful to HER!

James Taylor and Barbara

Monday, July 7th 5PM

James Taylor is playing tonight and I talked with him this afternoon in back of the main stage.  What thrill!  He has a new CD due out in the fall with his "Band Of Legends"  and he will be playing with them tonight. He calls them the best players in the business. Steve Gadd and Luis Conte on percussion, Larry Goldings on piano, Mike Landau on guitar, Jimmy Johnson on bass -- twelve players including James.  We talked about his tour, the new record, his 60th birthday celebration at Tanglewood, and the Vineyard.  We are all so psyched to see him play.

Another show we are looking forward to is Bettye Lavette.  We're streaming it live so check it out at around 8:30.  We saw her a couple of years back in Newport and she is so exciting and completely engaging.

Sunday, July 6th 5PM

We were just was over at The Black Sheep Stage checking out Chuck Prophet and on the way we had a few moments with blues piano player David Maxwell who had just played at The Barney Danson Theater.  It is a relief to go inside the theater to catch some of his set and get out of the blazing sun, and David's incredible playing was as cool as could be.  Everybody's talking about Snoop Dogg -- his set is coming up on The Bank Of America Stage; Primus is set to play next on The Rogers Stage which is just behind our trailer.  We will stream Widespread Panic tonight!

Two days of ramping up and we're a pretty well-oiled machine.  Today will test that theory -- it's the first early start day that will make yesterday and the day before seem like a walk in the park.  The music starts at 1 today and performers include Steely Dan, Lucinda Williams, Adrian Belew, Chuck Prophet, and Richard Thompson.  The weather has been amazing!  It's another sunny day, a little warmer than the past few days, and what seemed at first to be a monster festival site, is now much more manageable; finally I know where I'm going!

mvyradio Production Trailer

Saturday, July 5th 12 noon

Allen Toussaint played last night on The Roots Stage with his very hot band.  I spent a little time with him right after his sound check -- what a thrill!  He was very cordial and animated as he talked about his career, both past and present.  He said "I love music and music loves me" and praised Patty Labelle, Bonnie Raitt and Paul McCartney -- just a few of the many artists that he has worked with.

Texas' Guitar Shorty had everyone going and at one point walked out into the crowd, playing his guitar "Red" all the way.  He was really engaging and very playful.  Guy Davis played in the Barney Danson Theater, a beautiful spot inside the War Museum.  The sound was impeccable and his storytelling and musical performance well received by the packed house.

Thursday, July 3rd 9 p.m.

The trailer is thumping with TV On The Radio on the Rogers Stage.  If you didn't know it was a band, you might think it was an earthquake.  Man, that BASS -- sinking deeper, deeper, deeper -- it's underground!  Nick is sitting next to me at our work desk, editing some of the audio we just recorded and we were laughing at how loud and low the bass is.  We were able to watch them on the monitors in here because we're sharing the trailer with Liverpool Court Studio and their whole set-up is in the other side of the trailer.

Taj Mahal

Things are completely rocking here tonight! Lots of people roaming from stage to stage, stopping by to sample the tunes on a beautiful clear night in Ottawa.  The Blind Boys of Alabama, in brilliant red suits are just wrapping up on The Roots Stage.  Allen Toussaint joined them for a few songs.  I was a ways away from the stage when I heard The Blind Boys and Toussaint's unmistakable piano sound.  Just beyond this stage is The Black Sheep Stage where Cassandra Wilson and her amazing band played "Caravan" and "St. James Infirmary".

Taj Mahal was in fine form on The River Stage.  The stages are pretty close together and the sound bleeds from one stage to another. at one point between songs Cassandra Wilson started dancing to The Blind Boys because it was so loud on her stage.

Thursday, July 3rd 9 a.m.

Lobster Mobile

It was Canada Day Tuesday and just like the 4th of July in The States, it's a BIG holiday with many people off work for the rest of the week.  So it was quiet yesterday with a holiday/Sunday feel when I arrived in Ottawa. Canadian flags are everywhere in this capitol city, celebrating the anniversary of the formation of British North America provinces under the name of Canada in the mid 1800's. The calm and peaceful vibe that I observed and experienced coming into Ottawa seemed to me to go deeper than just the holiday.  It feels slower here and not as high pitched as the States, and just different.

Joe drove up in the Lobstermobile Tuesday with all the gear.   That gear is now in our trailer, ready for action on site at Bluesfest.  The festival started in 1994 in Major Hills Park as a one stage, three day event.  It has grown into a six stage, eleven day festival and is one of the largest in the world.  The organizers are committed to booking local, regional, national and international musicians of diverse musical genres.

More than half the performers at the 2007 Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest were Canadian and of those artists, more that 40 % were from Ottawa.  Big commitment to local musicians and to the city of Ottawa.  Not only does the festival provide this world class event in and for the city, but in 2000 the organization developed an outreach program called "Blues In The Schools".

It's raining this morning and as Gary said when I just checked in with him to make a plan for the day, "it looks like that 'rain all day' kind of rain."  And me, I just brought sandals.  I might have to buy some sneakers just to get them muddy.

Wednesday, July 2nd, 4:17p.m.

The Blue Lobstermobile has arrived in Ottawa!

Yep, it’s mvyradio at the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest and we’re honored to be the Official Internet Radio Station of the festival and are very flattered to be part of this historic event. This year, the festival has lined up James Taylor, Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Lucinda Williams, Brian Wilson, Feist, Kathleen Edwards, Keb Mo, Ray Davies, Richard Thompson, Robert Randolph, Shelby Lynne, Taj Mahal, and more.

Indeed, Ottawa Bluesfest fans of all stripes should be delighted with that already exciting line-up but it just got better with the addition of genre-breaking artists like Snoop Dogg, Wyclef Jean, Zappa Plays Zappa and Michael Franti & Spearhead. This monumental festival is longer than any we’ve ever had the pleasure of attending – 11 days in all – and we're very excited about the possibilities.

The stagehands are setting things up, now. The beverage and food tents have popped up around the festival grounds (check out our panorama below and the pictures of the setup process on our picture page, too), and we're snug in our production trailer.  mvyradio will be here every single day, with recorders and cameras in-hand. Not only will we be capturing audio from all the stages, but we’ve partnered with a world-class video production company – Liverpool Court Studios – to record video clips and interviews from as many artists as we can.

Sure, we’d like you to listen to all our coverage, but we really would like to see you there in-person. Tickets for any one of these shows or for 11-day festival passports are available on-line or at all Bluesfest ticket outlets. See www.ottawabluesfest.ca for complete details.
