A tradition for mvyradio On the Road is Newport every summer. This year, we decided to invite some of the festival artists to the house where we stay, fire up the grill, turn on the recorder and see what happens.

Lucky for us, it was a great idea.

Richie Havens in all his grace and eloquence… rising songwriter Sydney Wayser, who portrays herself as “Intimate and playful, placid and serene”… Kaki King, whose guitar playing continues to defy definition, one of the Vineyard's favorite sons, Willy MasonRichard Julian, who gave us some new insights to what life is like when your career is a working musician… our dear friend, Kate Taylor, who lights up a room with her soulful intimacy wherever she goes… and Red Rooster, a group that puts a spin on Americana music like no one we've heard before (and who came back to jam with Kate's band).

And, that's where we should probably take this story, next. To Saturday night, for the party at Joe's house. Rather than us wax on about what happened, let's let some of our Friends of mvyradio, Paul & Marie Pedenski, tell you in their own words.

The pre-show party

"We got invited to a party at Joe's house on Saturday night. Debated about going; most likely some corporate geeks and a bunch of people we didn't know, but it was Saturday night in Newport and worse case we'd check out the house, have a few drinks, and take off knowing no one would miss us. However, as so often happens in life, best case was something you could have never imagined ahead of time.

We drove in through the brick gate and parked on the lawn noticing that folks were starting to congregate on the patio out by the pool house.  We were immediately welcomed and invited in by Barbara and from that moment on felt that we truly were friends of mvy. Barbara introduced us to Joe and that was one of many pleasant experiences. His disarming personality and genuine broad smile quickly reminded all of his friends that they were there to have fun and, most importantly, enjoy the music.

We spent some time getting to know PJ and Marianna, and then noticed Kate. An engaging woman with a shock of long straight blond hair, side seam studded jeans, Wampanoag necklace and an amazing long black cherry coat. The coat had the feeling of a formal tuxedo jacket; reminiscent of red tails. Whether you knew Kate Taylor or not, it was clear that she is an entertainer and before long entertain us she did. Kate, Billy and Sam seamlessly ran through a set that highlighted Kate's style and emotion making every person in the room feel like you had actually experienced part's of her life right along side her. From wedding advice to hunting rabbits to Tina Turner's Fool In Love to the poignant reminder in Red Tail Hawk that Charlie hasn't left Kate alone just yet, all of Joe's friends were treated to a unique experience to understand why God put true entertainers, and the rest of us, on this earth.

This note would not be complete without mentioning that Kate Taylor took the opportunity to call out another performer from the crowd.  mvyradio's own “Barbara Dacey” came to the mike and backed by Billy Derby and Sam Zucchini on guitars, added her savory version of “Angel from Montgomery”.  It was quite a night.

Unfortunately we had told the sitter that we would be back by nine, and as Marie and I reluctantly slipped out at 10:15 PM we couldn't help but smile all the way back to Wickford... We thank you all for that wonderful gift and hope to remain friends of mvy, and all of you, for a long time to come."

Thank you, Paul and Marie. We couldn't say it better ourselves. And thanks to all who helped make the weekend so special, Elizabeth, Frank, Margaret, Chuck, Carla, Cliff, Nina, Leppy, JP Jones and all the artists who joined us to play and, of course, our wonderful Friends of mvyradio!

And all of you who are reading this can relive the magic of our Summer weekend in Newport! Above are some of the interviews and performances we captured (hint: there's more on the way). Kick back, pretend you hear waves lapping outside your window, that there's someone very special only a few feet away with a guitar and a microphone, and enjoy.
