What is the Newport Folk Festival? Well, the best way to describe it is let George Wein, the guy who started it all, explain... "The Newport Folk Festival has been dedicated to fostering American music for decades and has become legendary in pop culture. Not only for the role it played in the early careers of artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Arlo Guthrie, Joni Mitchell and others, but for its continued presence through the years as a showcase for generations of performers. It has been a part of New England almost as long as Dunkin’ Donuts, so it’s fitting that we join forces."

Amos Lee

Well you can now refer to me as "PJ Finn, star of stage and screen"!  Okay, so I was only on the Main Stage and the Jumbotron for a minute, introducing Amos Lee [website], but it did give me the chance to say a worldwide Thank You to all those folks who've been donating to www.friendsofmvyradio.org.  You're hearing where your money goes---into the broadcasting, streaming and archiving of shows like Newport Folk.

I'm typing quickly, to try to run in two directions, simultaneously, as 2 Country Legends perform on seperate stages.  National Treasure Ralph Stanley [website] is on the Harbor Stage.  And it won't be the heat making me swoon when i get to the Main Stage, as the lovely Emmylou Harris [website] and her crystal clear voice wafts out over Newport Harbor.

It's early Sunday morning and we're getting started down at Fort Adams.  Day 3 of the festival and the weather couldn't be better.  It's a lot cooler than it has been over the last few days and there's a sweet breeze blowing through and lots of sunshine.  I'm backstage at the mvyradio production tent --our command center.  We have two "rooms", one for recording and streaming the mainstage shows and one for journaling, editing and streaming on The On The Road Newport Channel.  We're getting so much music recorded that we have a continuous stream of performances from this year's festival.  Check it out here.

There were over 7500 people here yesterday and this is a huge jump in attendence.  During the Allman Brothers [website] set we went up on the top of the fort to look out over the festival grounds. Absolutely amazing!  A sea of dancing people, and tons of boats out in the bay.  We'll be brodcasting the Allman's set starting at 5 p.m. today.  Listen if you can because the show was great!!  Lots of memorable moments, but as we were checking out the recording out for this afternoon's broadcast, what captured me was the interplay between guitarists Derek Trucks [website] and Warren Haynes [website].  Totally inspired playing!  The best part of the whole scene was the age range of the audience --little kids to big kids to really big kids (adults)!

Grace Potter

Well, Grace Potter [website] just killed it.  I know some of you streaming listeners lost the signal for a bit, but don't worry, we'll be posting the set, uninterupted, later today.  John Butler [website] is on stage right now, doing "Zebra."  I know Alison Hammond, who's holding things down at the station, is probably bopping around the studio.  I know that this is one of her favorites.

It's so hot here.  We're drinking water and trying to find shade, but having a blast.

There's a lot of exciting moments to come.  I just saw Emmylou Harris waiting in the wings of the Wainwright Song Circle set .  Will she sing with them????

Did you ever see one of those Bugs Bunny cartoons where he's carrying 15 pies and he trips and they all go up the air, and he's running back and forth with lightning speed catching every single one before it hits the ground?

That's what Saturday morning at Fort Adams feels like for the broadcast team here in Newport.

We've spent weeks preparing for all kinds of details and eventualities, that are all about to hit the floor at the same time, and we're lunging and spinning and catching each one, with the goal of a fantastic worldwide broadcast.

There are 3 recording crews---one for each stage---with their finger hovering above the Record button.  We had a team of staffers positioned at the front gate, handing out special mvyradio lanyard, with stage schedules attached.  The cameras and video camera are at the ready, and I'm trying to remain calm.  Barbara is headed to the main stage to introduce The Dirty Dozen Brass Band [website], and we're off!!!

Linda Ronstadt

Hot August breezes have been rolling over Newport tonight as folks gather for the beginning of The Newport Folk Festival.  There was a huge house for Linda Ronstadt [website] and Madi Diaz [website], and despite a generator failure that derailed the show for a half an hour, things are off to a great start.  Madi Diaz was great--a solid sound and an impressive performance!  I spent some time with her before the show and it was clear that she was as excited as she was nervous about this great opportunity that she had to play her music in front of so many people.  She totally scored and made a whole lot of new fans.

Linda Ronstadt's career has been long and varied, and the songs she performed demonstrated the wandering spirit that inspires her musical adventures.  She was very talkative and seemed to enjoy putting her career into focus by the way that she introduced and rolled out the songs.  An encore was in order at the end of the night and the audience was waiting to hoot and howl for "Desparado", the Eagles song that she recorded many years ago, and one she performed tonight to the delight of her fans at The International Tennis Hall Of Fame.

The On The Road crew has expanded with PJ and Gary arriving, and many more mvy staffers and friends.  Bruce shot 250 + photos with his new camera-he's narrowed it down to about 20.  All of us are off to bed for a few hours of sleep before tomorrow's shows.

Joe Gallagher

The first members of the On The Road crew have arrived in Newport and we are getting set for another weekend of music and fun at the storied Newport Folk Festival.  Captain Joe Gallagher and his wife Elizabeth took us on a tour of Newport harbor last night at sunset and we got our fill of a beautiful sunset and scores of magnificent yachts.  It's been said many times-Newport is one of the most beautiful towns on the East Coast and a prime spot for a music festival.  And two of the largest and most legendary festivals take place here over the next two weekends -- The Dunkin' Donuts Newport Folk Festival and the JVC Jazz Festival.  For close to fifty years, musicians and music fans have gathered to share the wealth.

Madi Diaz

Joe is down at Fort Adams working on our technical set-up for the next two days, and a few of us will head over to The Casino around noon to get ready for Linda Ronstadt and Madi Diaz.  This is the first time that Linda has played at Newport, so everyone is excited about her appearance tonight.  Madi Diaz is a young singer from Boston's Berklee College of Music who has already had quite a career.  She went to the legendary Paul Green School of Rock in Philadelphia and this is her first appearance at Newport and the biggest show she has ever done.  It's off to the races!
