mvyradio @ Newport Folk Festival 2006

mvyradio
was proud to once again be a part of the Dunkin' Donuts Newport Folk Festival.  We were in Newport, Rhode Island, this past weekend, bringing all the excitement of this annual, world-class event to our listeners around the world, as the festival's Official Worldwide Internet Radio Station.

What is the Newport Folk Festival? Well, the best way to describe it is let George Wein, the man who started it all, explain... "The Newport Folk Festival has been dedicated to fostering American music for decades and has become legendary in pop culture. Not only for the role it played in the early careers of artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Arlo Guthrie, Joni Mitchell and others, but for its continued presence through the years as a showcase for generations of performers. It has been a part of New England almost as long as Dunkin’ Donuts, so it’s fitting that we join forces."

Ronan Tynan

Here it is Sunday night, the festival has wrapped up, and we are back at the house hanging out and re-living the experience of the incredible weekend that we have all shared together.  Everybody has a favorite performance or moment to recount-  someone is in the kitchen doing their best Ronan Tynan imitation. Oh no! it's getting out of control- "Ronan Does The Grateful Dead", "Ronan Does Reggae".  Yikes!!!!

It seems that everyone agrees on the highlights- Grace Potter and the Nocturnals [website], David Gray [website], Sonya Kitchell [website] , David Rawlings and Gillian Welch, and Odetta [website].  Every performance was great, really, and the festival was very balanced.  It was fanatastic to get to know the Festival Production staff-hat's off for a wonderful weekend.  Thanks also to The Business Innovation Factory's RIWINS project and Chris at Nevessa Production Woodstock. Big thanks to the exceptionaly hard working mvyradio crew- we couldn't have done it without you. Thank you to all the musicians and our listeners!

We live for the music-until next time...

Saturday, August 5th 2:00P-PJ
Slowly the pool house, or "the beach house" as Joe is calling it now, is coming alive-up an' at 'em! The whole mvy crew is staying here and we've established our own little on the road commune for the weekend.  It's a gorgeous morning, clear and dry, with the sun sparkling on Narragansett Bay. The house is just east of Fort Adams, where the second day of the folk festival will get underway in a few hours.

Yesterday was outstanding! We broadcast Chris Smither [website] , Bettye Lavette [website] , Roseanne Cash [website] , and David Gray [website] from the mainstage. This is all so thrilling for us for so many reasons, but mostly because we know that people were able to listen all over the world as they went about their day yesterday, either close to a radio or a computer. To be able to transport thousands of people to the festival via the air or web was our goal-mission accomplished! We're set to do it all again today!

Bettye LaVette

It's been a whirlwind of a morning (now actually afternoon).  There are miles of connections to be made, both electrical and personal.  Joe, the station owner, was once again, on the roof of Fort Adams, fine tuning the wireless connection that he built himself.  Meanwhile, Barbara has just been pulled away from the mvyradio tent, by a Folk Fest person who says, "I'm bringing David Gray [website] over for an interview in 5 minutes."  We didn't know it was coming, but that's World Wide Radio, on the fly.

I've been chewing up my cell minutes talking to Nick and Alison, who are holding down the other "Fort," back at the station.  It takes a lot of hands and a lot of connections to bring you these amazing performances.

I said it on stage, and I'll say it again, Bettye LaVette [website]  is incredible.  A powerful, elegant woman of soul.  I feel so lucky to have that show, now in our archives.

There's much more to come, but right now the connection being made is the webmaster's boot, to my butt---he needs this laptop back to upload Chris Smither [website] , and more . . .

Saturday, August 5th 1:00A-BD

We have a large contingent of mvyer's here in Newport and everyone is psyched for the weekend.  PJ and Tabitha rolled in tonight along with Todd, our webmaster and Bruce, our director of sales. It's a unique thing to "work" a festival.  Everyone has their part in the production, everyone has a role to play. And we are just a small segment of the Newport Folkfest enterprise!  To make one of these festivals happen takes a lot of hard work and intense patience, and it's very exciting to watch it all happen.

Cherish The Ladies put on a fabulous show-WOW! What incredible musicians they are.  One of the singers said that her mother was listening in Ireland, and we thought, okay, this is why we do this.  Remember? Making the connections.  Ronan Tynan was in rare form, pleasing the crowd with his wit and songs.  He and his band did a version of "I Still Havent Found What I'm Looking For", complete with Ronan wearing sunglasses and doing the rock star dance on stage!  He is Irish...

Friday, August 4th 6:30P-BD

There have been a few intense thunder and lightning storms over the last couple of days, and they have come very close to "the pool house", our home away from home and our base of operations for the folk festival.  Earlier this afternoon, we had a soaking- a quick downpour that passed through and took the humidity with it. With the intense heat, it's been a relief to be able to jump in the pool often, and that's just what I've been doing about 1AM the last couple of nights.  It's so quiet- just the sound of the wind and the water lapping!

We're at The Tennis Hall of Fame now, ready to webcast Cherish The Ladies and Ronan Tynan.  Both sounded great during their soundchecks and it's an absolutely beautiful night in Newport. This kick-off night is always very sweet and it seems that tonight will be no different.  Before the show, I will sit down and talk to George Wein, the founder of the festival.  He has been the driving force behind this event for close to fifty years, and he was integral in presenting "Irish Night at Newport".

Friday, August 4th 9:30A-BD

Cherish The Ladies

After months of planning and preparation, the Dunkin's Donuts Newport Folkfest is about to begin!  We've been on site since Wednesday, spending time at Fort Adams State Park and The Tennis Hall Of Fame.  mvyradio will be bringing a large portion of the festival to the air and web, so there are a TON of logistical issues.  Tonite Ronan Tynan [website]  and Cherish The Ladies [website] play at The Casino as part of "Irish Night at Newport".  We will be streaming the concert starting at 8PM.

Tomorrow the action moves to Fort Adams where The Duhks [website]  will kick off the day at 11:30AM.  The whole mvyradio on the road crew will be in Newport, both backstage and out front.  We hope to see you, and make sure to stop by to pick up some lobster gear AND get your picture taken so we can post in on the site!
