Tom Rush

Not only is it not raining now, but the sun has shown it's beautiful face! As Tom Rush [website] was wrapping up his wonderful set, the long absent orb emerged to everyone's delight. Tom was in great form, singing many of his familiar and seasoned songs like "Child's Song", "The Circle Game", and "Wasn't That A Mighty Storm". He seemed genuinely thrilled to be at Flye Point, and you can bet he's seen his share of festivals. The feeling here is very special, with seemingly the whole community coming together to make the day a success. We have been brought into their town and their homes, and we are so happy to be a part of it.

Odetta is on stage now. She started her set by reading a Marianne Williamson poem and then went into "This Little Light Of Mine (I'm Gonna Make It Shine)", a song that has been part of her repetoire for decades. David Grisman [website] and John Sebastian [website] will wrap up the night, just before dark.

Al Stewart

Despite the on and off rain, things are in full swing at The Flye Point Festival. Al Stewart [website][performance] is on stage and he is absolutely amazing!! His stories are a riot and the music sounds great. He's playing "Year Of The Cat" right now, and in typical wacky form, he started it off with a riff from "Heard It Through the Grapevine". Kevin Roth [website][performance] played earlier, with a guest appearance from Noel Paul Stookey, and David Mallett played with his very accomplished violin player and bassist. Al is finishing...gotta go to close down his recording and get ready for The Mammals [website][performance]. Here comes the "...Grapevine" riff again!!!

Odetta and BD

The Biancos have satellite Internet and they have graciously opened their house to us so that we can get these words and pictures to you from Flye Point.  Tomorrow we'll be sending music across the world- wide web. We just got back here and we were whispering because we thought everyone was sleeping. But then Kim, Frank, and their son Nicholas walked in with their friends and now everyone is hanging out, talking and watching the Red Sox play the Phillies.  There was a great dinner and party at The Lookout Inn, where Odetta [website][performance], Noel Paul Stookey [website], and Dave Mallet [website] were mingling with all of the people who are responsible for putting on this festival.  The food was fantastic!  I was able to spend a few moments with Odetta, before she went off into the night to rest up for tomorrow's concert.  She was here for the first year of the festival in 2004 and seems happy to be back.  Time to head out to our overnight digs for some sleep.

We made it!

After a few wrong turns (the sign for Rte 15 just pointed just one way- we followed it north, but we had to go south...darn!) we have arrived in Brooklin! This is the third year for the festival at Flye Point, just outside Brooklin. What a spot! Flye Point is a peninsula, so we're surrounded by water on three sides. It's northeast of Rockland, about a half hour south of Blue Hill, right on Herrick Bay. Check it out on this map.

We walked down to the stage, which of course is empty now, waiting for the wonderful musicians that will make it their home for a little while tomorrow. It's foggy, but we're not complaining. The weather forecast we saw this morning predicted lots of showers. We're not sure what tomorrow will bring, but if it stays like this, we're cool! The lupines are out and they are exquisite. Maine is known for these beautiful flowers and they're everywhere.

Jeff Salzmann, the Flye Point Festival founder and director, gave us a hearty welcome at the Lookout Inn, which is has been owned and operated by the Flye family for over 100 years. It's the headquarters for the festival. The atmosphere is warm and busy, as everyone is focused on getting set for tomorrow.

Lupine in bloom

We hit the road yesterday about 5PM in the Blue Lobster mobile, on our way to Augusta, Maine, and then to Brooklin for the Flye Point Music and Arts Festival. It was a long trip but we hardly noticed because we had lots to do to keep us occupied. The ever entertaining Jay Borselle was the co-pilot, providing running commentary, navigational support, and most importantly, THE TUNES!! After we got out of mvy range, and after we got some batteries for his FM transmitter, he plugged in the i-pod and got things going. Everything from The Artic Monkeys to Dusty Springfield, The George W. Bush Singers to Lucinda Williams. Jay the dj!

Amie Archambault, mvyradio account executive from Newport, is with us to sell our Blue Lobster gear at Flye Point. Jay and I were joking about the fact that we hadn't met Amie yet and that we hoped we liked her because we'll be spending the whole weekend together. We picked her up in Cataumet and immediately told her what we thinking, and she said she was thinking the same thing. We all knew at that moment that we were cool. She brought a cooler of water and cheese sticks that came in handy a few hours into the trip.

We entered the state of Maine with a cheer, and Jay remarked, "Ah, road signs in miles and kilometers, we must be in a border state". Finally, about 11PM, we got to Augusta and made our way to the Comfort Inn, happy to know that a good night's sleep was not far off. Now, it's morning and Bruce Biette, our fearless sales manager, has joined us. We're set for the next leg of our journey, the two plus hour trek to Brooklin and the festival site.
